So I now know why my mothers FERGUSON FDT500 has the important channels up in the 8xx range. I have tried a new aerial, wire, deleting offending channels, manual re-tunes and all I do is change the channels numbers but they stay in the 8xx range.

I bought the box so as to make my mothers house ready for the switch to digital. Next time something that requires forward thinking is promoted I will do precisely NOTHING until the old service finally stops.

So from the comments above it is obvious that I am not going to find a technical solution. It looks like a more political solution is best though I might just dump the product on the suppliers doorstep so they can deal with the waste.

TWO THINGS TO LEARN as I am proud of two things I got right and I suggest others adhere to this.
ONE :- I only paid about £20 for this box about 5 years ago.
TWO :- I have avoided buying TVs etc that have Freeview built-in.
SO :- The moral of the story is shop around as the price does not necessarily represent quality just supplier profit level. I always suspected that if a TV has a built-in Freeview or even a DVD that if these fail then the whole TV is scrap - I did not realise that the failure would be replaced by obsolescence. Sadly its a disposible lifestyle and we will pay for it later but at least I did not junk my old TV and Video for some dead-end "progress".

My issue is that we are having the digital switch over forced on us and enbraceing the change early seems to have been foolhardy. Does that make us "victims" ? and what right to redress does that give us ?.

Recently bought some more Epson compatibles (amazing prices) and spotted this USB mouse for just £1.50, so ordered one to use on friends and family's systems if necessary.

It's a Belkin Netmaster model (Windows 98) for USB 1.1 and 2.0. Tried it on my XP Pro system and it installed immediately, utilising the Microsoft drivers; however, it wouldn't work despite the cursor being present.

But then I turned the mouse over to check the tracking ball and found it protected by a small plastic cover. Once this cover was removed, the mouse worked exactly as it should..:-)

I used to be able to switch off me freeview (in line with energy saving advice now I have to leave it on standby contrary to energy saving advice - great work.

Now I find that every now and then I have my reception interrupted for up to 30 minutes while the box "updates" itself, not that I an see any difference after the most unwelcome interruption.

Obviously a well thougght out and executed "improvement?". Well it might be if it was well thought out and well executed, which it is not.

It seems that after today's (30th September) retuning the Bush IDLCD15WO8DHD Digital TV with integrated DVD player can be added to the list of equipment rendered useless by Freeview. I retuned as instructed by the broadcast information and now just get "DTV - No signal" and cannot even select the retune menu. This DTV was purchased in January 2008, so is not old in my view. I will be contacting Bush (if I can find out who they really are nowadays) and hope that they are more helpful than the others mentioned on this site. Since the TV cost £169.99 I consider that some form of compensation should be available to enable me to buy a like-for like replacement and will be contacting Ofcom, MP, Freeview and anyone else I can think of. The problem is that a minority never gets far, so if this is a wide-scale problem maybe a No 10 petition should be set-up?

I would like to point out that you have not quite covered all the now defunct Set Top Boxes in your list. My old Philips ONN Digital box (circa 1999)has now lost BBC1 and BBC2 in the first stage of the switchover here in West Cornwall.I will be losing all the others sometime in August!

I would like to know how digital is supposed to be better, as here we are 10 years on and still getting picture freeze-ups and box lock-ups!

Brown The Clown has got a lot to answer for!

I notice that you do not sell adhesive labels; I personally use both Avery and Decadry Full Face Inkjet DVD labels( because my printer does not accept discs) with excellent results. Have you considered stocking good quality labels?

[Reply from Disk Depot: We stock a wide range of disc labels in a variety of finishes and layouts. You can find them in the consumables section; however, thanks for the feedback- we'll also include them in the "media accessories" section in future, to make them easier to find.]
