As well as the common DVD+R and DVD-R discs, there are other types of recordable blank DVDs out there. Let’s take a look at some of the types you may find most useful…
Dual Layer / Double Layer 8.5GB DVDs
As the title suggests, “Dual” (or “double”) layer DVDs have two recording layers to allow a maximum storage capacity of 8.5GB per disc. Dual Layer DVDs are relatively new and are more expensive than single layer DVDs- because of this they’re supplied in single units or packs of 10 DVDs. (However, prices have fallen a lot recently, and they are now relatively affordable). There are two types of DVD dual layer discs; both types can only be written to once.
Most DVD recorders built since 2005 will support Dual Layer DVD+R (“Dual Layer plus R”) burning, but you’re advised to check before buying. (Check your drive for the “double rectangle” DVD+R DL logo as shown on the left). These DVDs can only be written to once. Most dual layer discs we sell are DVD+R DL.
DVD-R DL is the “DVD-R” group’s answer to DVD+R DL. It is basically the same idea, but is a much newer (and rarer) format than DVD+R. Because of this, it is only supported by fairly recent drives, and we recommend that you check that your drive is capable of burning it. Look for the DVD-R DL logo (shown on the left) on your drive.
DVD-RAM
These DVDs are only compatible with certain recorders. Like re-writable DVDs they can be used many times. Once recorded these DVDs are only compatible with certain players that support the DVD-RAM format.
DVD-RAM discs have longer data storage lifetimes than other writable DVD types, and for this reason they are excellent for archival use if your drive supports them.
Rewritable DVDs (DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM
Re-writable DVDs come in both plus and minus format (as well as DVD-RAM format, above) with a maximum capacity of 4.7GB per disc. These DVDs can be written to many times – by simply erasing the DVD you can re-record as many times as you wish. As long as you keep the DVD free from scratches and dirt, the DVD should last for a very long time. These DVDs are usually supplied in smaller packs of 10 discs and are very popular with standalone personal DVD recorders. They’re suitable for Data, Music, Video or Games.
Mini 8cm “Camcorder” DVDs
These DVDs are reduced size mainly for use in camcorders. They are compatible with PC or standalone DVD recorders, but only have a maximum storage capacity of 1.4GB. These DVDs are popular for use in game consoles or used by customers for promotional use. These DVDs can only be recorded once and are available in both plus and minus, minus being the most popular format.
